things behind things

I’m jamming with the new Bon Iver record of late, SABLE, fABLE.

Justin Vernon’s lyricism is unmatched, in my opinion, and on this record he addresses some ideas that are very central to his musicianship. Namely, the constant return to the pain of loss and sadness that first propelled him into the spotlight with his album For Emma, Forever Ago. On SABLE,fABLE however, he allows himself to feel again the joy of life, and find happiness even in the potential of loss.

The ideas flowing through the songs are of peace, acceptance, love, and openness.

I find myself trying to lean in to these ideas, especially those in the song Everything Is Peaceful, Love. On this track, Vernon talks about the possibility of loss. He is acutely aware that everything is temporary, and even what feels permanent and wonderful may someday change and wane. As a result, he aims to remain in the moment – right here, right now, everything is peaceful, regardless of what may come later. I love that image.

I can’t say my own life is that peaceful, but I try to find the moments anyway. Even if things may return to anxiety or doubt in an hour, right now everything is peaceful, love.

At the end of the day I’m just some guy putting words on a website for no one and that’s okay. If you find yourself here with me this time, please take a deep breath, settle into the moment, and remind yourself that right now everything can be okay.
